NAROK, KENYA – The landscape of Kenyan tourism is shifting as construction intensifies on the Maasai Mara International Airport (also known as Narok International Airport). Located in the Ewaso Ngiro area, the multi-billion shilling project is officially scheduled for completion by December 2026.
Once operational, the airport will provide a direct link for international travelers, allowing them to bypass the traditional layover and road transfer from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
Key Project Highlights:
- Direct Access: Designed to handle long-haul international flights, significantly reducing travel time for tourists from Europe, the US, and Asia.
- Economic Impact: The facility is expected to boost Narok County’s economy by creating jobs and increasing the volume of high-end visitors to the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
- Strategic Location: Situated near Narok town, the airport will serve as a central hub for the entire South Rift tourism circuit.
Current Travel Status
Until the 2026 launch, the Maasai Mara remains accessible via Wilson Airport (WIL) in Nairobi. Domestic carriers like Safarilink and AirKenya continue to operate daily shuttle flights into the reserve’s network of local airstrips, including Keekorok, Mara Serena, and Musiara.
The Kenyan government views this project as a “game-changer” for the hospitality industry, aiming to position the Maasai Mara as a standalone global destination.
