Due to persistent heavy rainfall across Kenya, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and regional authorities have issued safety advisories for several key national parks and reserves. While most parks remain open, specific gates and internal routes are currently restricted.
Park-Specific Status Updates
Tsavo East National Park
- Sala Gate is temporarily closed to all incoming traffic.
- Routes from Malindi to Sala Gate and Sala Gate to Aruba are currently impassable due to flash floods.
- Alternative Access: Visitors are advised to use Bachuma Gate or Voi Gate (via Voi) for entry.
Tsavo West National Park
- The bridge at Iltilal (Tsavo West/Amboseli route) has sustained significant damage, with murramed sections washed away on both sides.
- The Kitani River has flooded; travelers must use the Rhodesia Bridge crossing instead.
Maasai Mara National Reserve
- Experiencing sustained rainfall leading to localized flooding and difficult road conditions.
- High-clearance 4×4 vehicles are strictly recommended for all game drives.
Nairobi National Park
- Remains open, but many internal tracks are slippery or temporarily impassable. Drivers must stick to designated main tracks only.
Karura Forest
- Partial Closure: Rivers have burst their banks. Paths leading to the caves, waterfalls, and the bridge are off-limits until further notice.

- Follow Ranger Guidance: Strictly adhere to all instructions from KWS rangers and park signage.
- Avoid Moving Water: Never attempt to cross flooded roads or swollen seasonal rivers.
- Stay Informed: Heavy rain is forecast to continue through March 9, 2026, particularly in the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, and Coastal regions.
